It's happened to me before. Leave a good at least 4gb for your system. I would seriously recommend scaling back to 4gb allocated ram, trust me, more slows it down.

If you allocate a ton of memory to Minecraft, it won't end up using it and the rest of your system will suffer from not having enough memory to work with.
